About 10 days ago a Captain of the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office was involved in a wreck near the intersection of Alabama Highways 33 and 24. Captain Curtis Mitchell, brother to Sheriff Gene Mitchell and Chief Deputy / Colonel Kenneth Mitchell was traveling south on Al. Hwy. 33 when his black Mercury Grand Marquis county vehicle left the roadway, struck a mailbox, continued on thru a deep ditch before coming to rest in the westbound lane of Al. Hwy. 24 just west of the intersection. Mitchell's vehicle collided with a westbound vehicle on Al. Hwy. 24. It was reported at least one occupant of the westbound vehicle was injured. It is reported that the County vehicle was totaled. State troopers investigated. Cause of the wreck has not been released. County policy requires anyone involved in an accident operating a county vehicle be drug tested immediately. Was Captain Mitchell drug tested? Just wondering if County policy was followed since it was the Sheriff and Chief Deputy's brother? Why has Sheriff Mitchell not issued a press release? What is the condition of those injured in the wreck?
