Liar Liar Pants on Fire...
New sheriff won't make brother chief deputy
The Decatur Daily, January 17, 2007. Kristin Bishop.
MOULTON — The new Lawrence County sheriff squelched rumors of possible nepotism on his first day in office.
Sheriff Gene Mitchell said he has no plans to hire his brothers, retired Moulton police officers. FALSE!
Why did Sheriff Gene Mitchell say on his first day he would not hire his brothers only to add them one month later at the two highest paid positions Colonel and Captain.
This is Captain Curtis Mitchell as you can see by the captain bars on his collar. He is the Sheriff's brother and is over courthouse security.
The Gene Mitchell administration is the first to have someone with such high rank as captain at the courthouse, courthouse security positions use to be deputies
supervised by the Chief Deputy. Since Sheriff Mitchell has been in office the courthouse security detail at one time consisted of a Captain, Lieutenant and a Sergeant at the
same time. That is a lot of money per hour to cover those three high salaries. For a relatively small county with money issues, the sheriffs office has a lot of positions with
rank compared to other counties and departments our size. It makes you wonder is rank established by merit or relationship? The rank of Captain is second only to Chief Deputy
and/or Colonel within the Department in both rank and pay. Captain Mitchell did not assume his position on the first day even though he took an oath of office on the first day.
He was actually put on the County pay roll one month later in February 2007, In what appears to be a clear violation of the Lawrence County Personnel handbook
section 1.2.1 Nepotism. Poor leadership to allow this, all depends on the last name.Captain pay according to the Lawrence County Commission: $21.31 per hour.
Captain Curtis Mitchell.
Captain Curtis Mitchell, right. Sheriffs brother!
