Mr. Long also mentioned that the Morgan County Sheriff's Office jail inmate cost as Inmate medical care at the Morgan County Jail is also costing the county. Long said they budgeted about $800,000 for that this fiscal year "but are on track to spend about $1 million, the second consecutive year they’ve gone over budget by that amount."
Employee Health Care costs are unavoidable. However, as we stand right now Sheriff Ana Franklin has 600 inmates in the jail. Many of those inmates should not be there. Sheriff Franklin makes money off of the number of inmates currently housed at the jail. The sheriff's incentive should be to process medically ill inmates and those who require medical treatment in and out as soon as safely possibly. If the inmate is mentally unfit to be housed in the county jail or is sick upon arriving at the jail, prompt medical care will help reduce the medical cost and the suffering on the inmate. The Law Firm from Georgia has been back in town in the past few weeks in regards to medical treatment at the jail. For years Sheriff Franklin and or her medical staff chose the drugs the inmates were authorized to take vice allowing the treating physician to be the deciding factor in the treatment of the patient. Many mentally ill inmates have struggled for years with their condition along with self medicating. The goal of the sheriff's office should be to continue with the medications the doctor as prescribed to process the patients in and out as soon as possible so that the family can seek help for their loved one. They should be able to do more for their loved on than the jail staff. In addition, the jail is usually understaffed for each shift. The jail is required to provide 20+ jail staff per shift. The jail is lucky if they have 10 per shift.
Sheriff Franklin has caused the county a huge amount of money over the past six years but contrary to her claim of lost wages she has not lost a dime. With the upcoming elections the citizens of Morgan County will have an opportunity to help rebuild the confidence of the sheriff's office by electing an individual who puts our county first. A candidate who does not have dollar signs for eyes. A person who will lead the sheriff's office by example. A person who can reform the image of the sheriff's office, initiate rehabilitation programs to assist inmates upon returning to society. It will take years to make some of the changes needed in the sheriff's office but you can do that easily with one vote at a time. Make your vote count.
Speaking of voting, the special vote for U.S. Senate is coming up very soon. Luther Strange is currently the acting U.S. Senator. To get rid of the Alabama swamp and the establishment we need to get out and vote, and now the rest of the Decatur Daily below.
