Just proves what I have always known all along. Some in law enforcement are the most corrupt, greedy and dishonest people on the planet. Not all, but a dang good bit. It sometimes seems the higher the office the higher the corruption. I wish every county had a Glenda Lockhart. Well done and keep it up Mrs. Lockhart!!
Didn't I read a story a few years back about a sheriff who was making a killing off of the money paid to his office for inmate food and he was giving them was PB&J sandwiches for every meal?
Etowah County's sheriff has 5 houses of his very own due to this money! Deep sea fishing yacht, hundreds of acres of property.....lives like a king!
He, is where I first learned this fact: The voting public is essentially deaf, dumb, and blind
Sheriffs.....You'd be hard pressed to find many of them that are worth a plug nickel! Not all but many!
@RTR123 Don't understand how that isn't embezzlement or something. How is that not theft of property? Is this money something the sheriffs can use for personal reasons as it appears from reading the story?
Ok, what I really want to know is simply this:
why on Earth did this Sheriff make such a loan to the car company??? What the the motive for that?
@Gribble My guess would be, and it's only a guess, that she thought she would make a nice quick profit off of money that doesn't even belong to her. What do you think?
Ah, I see. Well, it's gross misappropriation of County Funds any way you slice it, and for that she needs to go to prison.
There should be a standard set by the Alabama Legislature for food served to inmates in city and county jails. That standard should be the same as used by public school systems in Alabama. There should also be unannounced food inspections during meal times.
Ever tried as a private citizen to see what foods are being served to jail inmates? You will be refused to see how your tax money is being spent. Want to see what are the written costs of items sold by jail commissaries to inmates? You will be refused that request.
There is little to none transparency in city and county jails. Those running the jails know that inmates are low on the list of most persons and that knowledge gives thugs in charge the freedom to neglect and abuse inmates.
@Dunk Be careful what you ask for; the jails only get $1.75 per inmate per day to provide three meals. You want them fed better? Be ready to pay a hell of a lot more for it.
Told you from day one this sheriff and her deputies were corrupt. Franklin is a liar. This article didn't mention, that I saw, where Franklin initially told the media she pulled the money from her retirement savings.
From the linked article:
"Alabama law allows sheriffs in the state to keep money left from feeding jail inmates as personal income, except where superseded by the county commission or local legislation."
THAT LAW NEEDS TO CHANGE.
@Dunk THAT is one extremely terrible law!! No wonder these inmates aren't being fed well...Wow! The people of each county and city need to demand that law is changed. What a backwards state we live in.
@TGTG34 This article also didn't mention, as another article did, that the Greg Steenson, that she claims she "did not know", is actually her cousin.
@NativeCreekNDN_RTR!!! @TGTG34 @inkpin4 "The Halls were injured when Franklin pulled in front of the couple’s car on Alabama 287 just south of the Interstate 65 interchange, according to a state trooper’s accident report."
According to the Whistleblower blog, Franklin was down there but didn't attend the conference mentioned nor was she even scheduled to be there.
How does a sheriff loan state and federal derived money to a private business and not already be in jail? If Sheriff Franklin isn't convicted of misuse of funds then there is no justice.
@DeaconBlue1 Any money left over after feeding the inmates apparently belongs to the sheriffs in this backwards state according to state laws. Terrible terrible laws.
Lots of twists and turns in the story but Ashley did a good job of keeping the story running in a readable direction.
It is a sorry POS sheriff who would plunder the food account of inmates. The more inmates she could arrest, the more money she had access to steal.
Kudos to Glenda Lockhart, who runs the Whistleblower. I wish every county had such a citizen.
sounds like a dirty sheriff she should be held accountable. all funds for all sheriffs should be accounted for
A simple solution is taking the Sheriff out of the loop for the inmate food budget. This is a perfect little scam for Sheriffs to profit. Somehow Mike Blakely got out of the corn dog caper but the little scam shed light on how Sheriffs are making big $ on top of their salary.
Alabackwards. Thank God for Mississippi, otherwise we would be in last place for government corruption. Hopefully she will be convicted and forced to pay back the $160,000.
Trump's approval ratings at historic low.
Well, you voted for a reality star and that's what you got, Republicans.
Or paying her legal expenses and Barnes Lovelace to try to keep the both of them out of jail. She is using those funds at her discretion also. This is not being addressed in Thursdays hearing though. Just the inmate food fund which is one of at least 23 accounts for the Sheriffs Office. This does not include tax payer money being transverse to accounts outside this county in Cullman County she opened.
As goes the idiots leading our country so goes the idiots even in the smallest town. Corruption is prevalent in government from the smallest town to Washington. You do not deposit city funds into a private bank account and mark it as "food account" just to make it look legal. Arrest her and everyone associated with her. As for the cops who searched a home without a warrant they should be charged with violating these people's constitutional rights.

The sheriff? This article? Both? I thought having to read The Iliad and Odyssey....written in Latin was hard....nothing compared to this.
