Alabama sheriff due in federal court this week for contempt hearing about inmate meals

Blondie
This is in regards as to why Franklin is still our sheriff. She is a huge Republican.Good friends with the Governor, very good friends with Luther Strange, and she and her current boyfriend,Charlie McNichol, were sitting directly behind Jeff Sessions,at his confirmation hearing in Washington D.C. McNichol is very good friends with Jeff Sessions. They are both from Mobile. She says that she will never serve time because of her connections to these politicians.I believe her. Alabama is the most corrupt state in America. I travel often to other states, and the people make fun of the " Good Ole Boys "in Montgomery.

Law enforcement officers for the most part are good public servants. All it takes is one corrupt officer to smear an entire force. Sheriff Franklin and cronies should be held accountable and face the consequences.

Information updated daily on Sheriff Ana Franklin and her criminal co-conspirator thugs at the    morgancountywhistleblower.com

Additionally as shared on the blog the Sheriffs Office has some excellent high quality professional law enforcement officers.   It is the Sheriff and her thugs.  The corruption is with Ana Franklin , Bones Wilson and Blake Robinson.  Then those she brought in like Larry Berzet and Ron Livingston  there are more but it's very complicated.  Read the blog and it's all there.

And thank you Ashley and the whistleblowers for doing a good job fighting corruption and letting us all know what is happening in our corrupt county.

I am saddened by this. I voted for her and live in Morgan County. I thought she was an honest sweet person who would make a difference...doesn't sound like she lived up to what she promised...TRANSPARENCY...not...I hope the Feds are on her because she did this County wrong...last Sheriff took money...shame on you Ana. I pray you surround yourself with law abiding and good people wherever you may end up after this fiasco.

@Bamagirl35801 I voted for her the first time in 2010 because we absolutely had to get rid of Bartlett. Not in 2014 though. I voted Darrell Childers, who didn't quite have the funds to make a splash. In the general election, even though Ana's name was the only one on the ballot I wrote-in Radley Balko who is a writer who advocates police reform.

@TGTG34 @Bamagirl35801 Darrell is a fine man and a good policeman.  I wish he would run again.  Ana is the Obama of sheriff's candidates.  She was an anomaly at first, so she garnered the "curiosity vote" in 2010.  After that, only idiots and people in her pocket voted for her again. Unfortunately, this county is full of both.  Good choice on Balko.  Much more intelligent than the usual "Nick Saban" write-in vote.

Regardless of democrat or republican, people who break the law should be prosecuted. This woman should be ASHAMED of herself! Pathetic!

TGTG34 posted this link:
The sheriff allegedly traveled to the beach to attend the event but she did not attend the event.
I did not think another elected official could top Mike Hubbard in the category of "corrupt slimebag".... but I think the sheriff beats Hubbard to win the category.

A Republican abusing power and stealing money. This isn't exactly "news."

@lol Its not just here, its the same in all the red states.  All the repugs are as crooked as they come.  Lying, stealing cheating, its their very nature.

@SmedleyLudlow @lol Misspelled Democraps. The reason we kicked the Democraps out was because they are as crooked as they come. Lying, cheating, and stealing is why we kicked them out in the first place.

$160,000 is not really close to $250,000. It's a little more than half that amount. Not that fairy tales by the Sheriff's lawyer even matter, since she and so many around her are obviously crooked as a dog's hind leg.

If Sheriffs are pocketing all this money from jail accounts, then why is the per diem for inmates so high?

A nony mis

A nony mis
@festschrift The per diem is not high, on the contrary, it's very low.  The problem is that the money is not spent on food.  People have the attitude that "They are just criminals and don't deserve to be fed well".  Aside from the inhumanity of that attitude, the problem is that many, maybe most, of the people who are in jail are not criminals, they are awaiting trial on a charge for which our constitution says they should be presumed innocent.  Wait until you find yourself or a family member in jail for a crime you or they did not commit and then decide if the per diem is too high.

After reading the entire account, I think Ashley Remkus has done a very good job of laying out the massive corruption in Morgan County. The sheriff is corrupt, most of the deputies are corrupt, and you would have to include the prosecutor's office and commissioners too. It is obvious that they all know or are involved.   We citizens in Alabama know that government police, prosecutors, and poltiicians in Alabama are as crooked as any you can find.  The real piece of garbage is the grandson.  What kind of punk would turn on his grandmother tor $200?  That is beyond the imagination for most of us.  The grandson is nothing but "chickens.....t".  This county is always in the news for drug busts, and police brutality and requires a complete clean out of the vermin in government.

inkpin4

inkpin4
@HighVisibility You had the 'Post of the Day' until you said that "the grandson" was the real piece of garbage. The VERY corrupt sheriff manipulated the grandson with the promise of money, and that they weren't going after his grandmother, they just wanted the Warden... THEY LIED! There's your REAL garbage. No way that I could condone what the grandson did... but they lied to him, pure and simple.

HighVisibility

HighVisibility
@inkpin4 I think anyone in their 20's who is in a Volunteer FD, should have enough sense to read the tea leaves.  The fact he stole a key to break in later should have set off the alarm of the year for that clown.  I know THEY LIED, but all cops, prosecutors, and politicians lie and the grandson knows that.  My guess is he got offered an FD position and cash if he followed through on the summiest act I've seen so far this year.  That or this grandson is dumber than dirt and some scumbag deputy could easily manipulate the man.  Stealing a key and coming back at night to plant a bug is nothing less than a low rent, characterless act.

inkpin4

inkpin4
@HighVisibility @inkpin4 Like I said, I don't condone what the grandson did at all, but the true garbage is the ones that put him up to it...  THEY are well above their 20's... and are SUPPOSED to be enforcing the law in our little county.
HighVisibility

@inkpin4   We both agree it was a vindictive setup by a corrupt sheriff and deputies.  The prosecutors and judges knew it too. Time for some serious firings and prison time for these corrupt clowns.

But y'all won't clean out any "vermin." That's the problem.
Y'all just mindlessly vote for whoever runs as a Republican.

@Ole Dude They must be gettin the same salary now as they did back then.  if she took that much money makes you wonder if its the first time.

@fuzzman @Ole Dude  Sheriff's have been doing this for decades and decades.  I remember one sheriff who had a farm.  He took the inmates to the farm year round: the inmates grew most of the food for the jail.  This was in the 90's.  They ate very well there.  However, not all sheriff's use that business plan to feed.

How did this corrupt low-life thug get the title of sheriff? Wow, she stole money from the inmates' grub account!

inkpin4

@socialuser4179 Simple. THIS low-life thug ran on the platform that she wouldn't keep the left over food money for herself like the PREVIOUS low life thug did. Aint that a hoot? ROFLMAO

Well, Anna's gone a long way from when I grew up a few doors from her. Unfortunately, she seems to have gone from a cute, sweet girl to a typical Alabama politician.

simple.  just lock her up ans serve her jail food until she pays up.  too many people these days claiming to be lovers of God while they treat others inhumanely.  jo arpiao tried such stuff in arizona.  he has been voted out finally and now too is up on federal charges.  people, treat others well.  God commands it.

Ashley, is this story rather poorly-written? I mean, we get to the seventh paragraph and find out the REAL reason for Thursday's hearing is a 2001 suit over JAIL CONDITIONS......NOT MEALS. The seventh paragraph, the third sentence, then goes back to the food funds....Was there an editor for this story? And, the first and fourth paragraphs just do not agree with each other. What is going on here?

CambronnesWord

CambronnesWord
@John Ferry There is never an editor for anything that is posted to al.com anymore. It's essentially a group blog, which also accounts for the frequent grammar and spelling errors.

@CambronnesWord @John Ferry Hsv Times fired all of the good writers and editors when they sold out to Alabama Media Group. Besides, if  they hired an editor, they wouldn't have enough payroll left for the "funny" SEC Shorts videos they make during football season...

@John Ferry I finally gave up about half way through and decided I could learn more from the comments. If anything, they would be more entertaining. The article sounds like a first draft.

@John Ferry Man! did you do your homework.  The 2001 suit was amended in 2009.  First thing I did.  Remkus is right no matter how you shake it out.

@John Ferry @fuzzman

This story is not poorly written. I appreciate all the details that Ashley included in the story. Don't blame Ashley because you had trouble following the story line.

Too many people want the Cliff Note version of a story. Their attention span is limited.

If we all pull together we have an opportunity to force the Alabama legislature to change the laws that allows Alabama Sheriffs to take inmate food funds.  Alabama is the ONLY state that gives less than honest sheriffs the right, incentive, and the opportunity to take leftover food funds. I believe that most of the sheriffs in Alabama are honest and take their job seriously.  The sheriffs have an opportunity to help us fight against this ridicules and outdated law. The question is will they?  If not, we voted them in office and we can vote them out.

The meal money was a secret perk that Sheriffs enjoyed until it was exposed. Sheriffs should not have a financial incentive to put people in jail.

Legislators are not gods. We are their bosses. They work for us.
Call your state Rep & Senator and DEMAND this law be changed. Make a nuisance of yourself. Pester them on FB, whatever it takes

This is simply impossible to believe. Why, I'm old enough to remember when people assured me that if only women were put in charge of things, we would have more compassionate and ethical government. I'm so disillusioned!

The law needs to be rewritten so that sheriffs cannot pocket excess food money. END OF PROBLEM!
